Frequently Asked Questions
🐾 Why rescue dogs? Why not simply train puppies?
Because there are incredible dogs sitting in shelters right now who may never get the opportunity to show what they can do. We believe some of those overlooked dogs have the temperament, intelligence, and heart to become extraordinary companions. By giving them a chance, we aren't just saving a dog—we're creating the possibility of changing another person's life.
1. What is The K9 Comeback Project?
We are a nonprofit dedicated to giving at-risk shelter dogs a second chance while connecting specially trained rescue dogs with people who can benefit from their companionship and support.
2. How does the K9 Comeback process work?
We identify at-risk shelter dogs, give them an opportunity to leave the shelter and decompress in foster care, and evaluate them for our program. Selected dogs receive specialized training before being matched with an appropriate individual.
3. What types of dogs are eligible for the program?
We look beyond breed, age, and appearance. We focus on temperament, trainability, behavior, and each dog's ability to thrive in a training and home environment. Some dogs may become Emotional Support Dogs, while others may be candidates for Service Dog training.
4. Who can receive a K9 Comeback dog?
We work with individuals who may benefit from a trained canine companion, including veterans, active-duty service members, first responders, healthcare workers, and individuals experiencing PTSD, anxiety, autism, mobility challenges, or other circumstances where a trained dog may provide meaningful support.
5. Do I need a medical diagnosis to receive a dog?
Not necessarily. We understand that seeking a diagnosis can be a barrier, particularly for first responders and others concerned about the stigma associated with mental-health diagnoses. Each applicant is evaluated individually based on their needs and the dog's suitability.
6. Are your dogs free?
Our goal is to remove as much of the financial barrier as possible, but our dogs do have an adoption fee. Fees start at $750 for Emotional Support Dogs and increase based on the complexity of training and preparation. All fees will be discussed with you before you make a commitment to a dog. If you are experiencing a financial hardship, please let us know—we're happy to discuss your situation and explore potential options.
7. How can I apply for a K9 Comeback dog?
Individuals interested in being matched with one of our dogs can complete our online application. We consider the applicant's needs, lifestyle, environment, and the temperament and abilities of available dogs to determine whether there is a good match. Click HERE to enroll!
8. What does the application process look like?
After completing our online application, someone from The K9 Comeback Project will schedule an interview to learn more about your request, lifestyle, and needs. Once we identify a potential match, we'll arrange a meet and greet. Multiple meetings may be needed to ensure the match is right for everyone—including your furry family members. After training, we'll complete an initial handoff session, followed by two private or group follow-up sessions. Once you and your dog are ready, we'll complete the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) assessment and explain the proper registration process.
9. What is required after I have been selected to receive a dog?
Once training is complete, you'll participate in an initial handoff session to learn your dog's commands and how to work together. You'll then complete two follow-up sessions, either privately or in a group, before taking the CGC assessment. We'll also guide you through the proper registration process.
10. What if I need extra support after my follow-up sessions or assessments?
We're always here to help! Our goal is to make sure both you and your dog are comfortable, confident, and happy together. If you need additional support at any point, just reach out. Sometimes a little extra guidance is all it takes to strengthen the bond and make your partnership successful.
11. How can I foster a dog?
Fosters are an essential part of our program. Foster families provide a safe place for dogs to decompress after leaving the shelter and help us learn more about their personality and behavior. You don't have to be a professional dog trainer to foster.
12. How can I help The K9 Comeback Project?
There are many ways to help! You can donate, foster, volunteer, sponsor a dog's training, provide supplies, donate raffle or event items, become a corporate partner, or help spread the word. Every contribution helps create another K9 Comeback.
13. Where does my donation go?
Donations directly support the dogs in our program, including professional training, veterinary and medical care, food, supplies, transportation, foster support, and other program costs. Your support helps give an at-risk shelter dog a second chance while helping change the life of the person waiting for them.
